Under general supervision, responsible for performing manual, semi-skilled, and skilled tasks in the operation and maintenance of equipment as assigned in the delivery and disposal of solid waste refuse. Work varies however, does require individual judgment within prescribed standards and procedures. These positions require flexibility to work Saturdays when scheduled as part of the regular 40-hour work week.
Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments and may involve exposure to loud noise, dust, odors, vibration, heat, cold, dampness, moving mechanical parts, traffic, and solid waste materials in all seasons and weather conditions. This position requires frequent standing, walking, sitting, crawling, bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, reaching, and climbing into and out of vehicles and equipment. Employees must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull containers, equipment, and materials weighing up to 75 pounds, and heavier items with assistance or mechanical aids. Employees may be exposed to hazards, chemicals, and infectious waste. Hand-eye and manual coordination are required to operate vehicles, tools, and equipment safely. Personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn as required.

Some demonstrated work experience in the operation of equipment, experience with tandem trucks helpful. Must possess or obtain a valid Class B CDL within the required probationary period, in accordance with City policy.
Graduation from High School or accredited GED Certificate.
Conduct daily vehicle inspections (tires, oil, lubricants, water, air filters, lights, fuel). Performs daily and monthly greasing, and basic routine maintenance on assigned equipment; conducts minor repairs as needed. Operate refuse collection trucks on designated routes for waste and recycling collection. Serve as a backup for loader, baler, and scale operators when needed. Maintain drop-off sites, rubble sites, and the transfer building. Sort and process public recyclables, rubble, appliances, and all materials managed by the Transfer Station, ensuring proper handling and disposal in accordance with established guidelines. Remove debris, tree branches, and other material from alleys and streets. Operator I continued: Track assigned vehicle equipment inventory and assist in monitoring trash bin inventory by reporting conditions and needed replacements observed while on routes. Maintain records of mileage, fuel, and oil consumption. Assist customers throughout the day. Address customer complaints and report actions to the Supervisor; Report waste violations with date, time, and issue details. Assist with snow removal as needed.
